I have been a dedicated office fan since it has begun. During the first 2 seasons, I thought the office was excellent. It relied on episodes featuring michael’s insensitivity towards his coworkers, him simply ‘not getting it’, and had an abundance of funny moments that did not center on the plot . I have found that over the past 2 seasons (3 and 4), The Office has stepped away from what made it so popular and focused on developing a plot with multiple layers. I feel that this has made the show somewhat of a grind. The simple daily antics that made the office what it is have been replaced by thick plots developing relationships among the characters. Although I am all for character development, I don’t think it should replace the core humor of the show. Antics like “The Office Olympics”, “Safety Training”, “The Fight”, etc.. episodes like these appealed to fans who loved watching Michael show his insecurities, his fears, his lack of knowledge, and general misunderstanding and awkwardness in social situations. Now, we are seeing relationships take over those simple situations that garnished huge laughs. I just wish the writers would stop ‘over-thinking’ and revert back to what MADE The Office popular.

Put it this way.. in seasons 1 and 2, you could watch an episode of The Office and get huge laughs every time.. they didn’t center around a thick plot, they didn’t require drama, and they certainly didn’t require twists and turns. They were simple, funny episodes that didn’t need an explanation or knowledge of previous episodes.

Once again, I just hope that The Office starts ‘bringing the funny back’ and stops making relationships the focal point of each episode.
